Dear Nye County School District Families and Community,
In the Nye County School District, we are committed to providing equitable, high-quality education to all. Our district is implementing a vision to ensure all students and staff are learning at high levels.
NCSD Superintendent Dr. Joseph Gent is focused on elevating our students to perform above state and national averages. To maintain this learning-focused environment and minimize daily challenges in the classroom, we want to gently remind our students and parents about our cell phone and smart device policy.
We know technology is an important part of our world, but distractions can be a hurdle to education. To help our students become adaptable, persistent, and self-directed learners, we require a space where students can focus entirely on their growth.
Here is a quick refresher on our policy regarding devices:
Devices Out of Sight: Student cell phones, earbuds, headphones, smartglasses and other electronic entertainment or recording devices must be powered off and stored out of sight. They should be kept securely in backpacks, lockers, or bags from the start of the school day upon entering campus until the final bell or the conclusion of the last instructional period.
Smartwatches: All smartwatches must be placed in airplane mode from the start of the school day until the final bell.
Recording is Prohibited: The school district strictly prohibits students from using any electronic device to photograph or record students or employees during the school day. Students can face serious disciplinary action if they record any events in school during the school day without clear permission from the school administration. However, school leadership can grant permission for photographs or recordings during assemblies and other celebratory school activities and performances.
Restricted Areas: The school district strictly prohibits the use of cell phones, cameras, video cameras, or any other electronic device with the capability of taking, storing, or transmitting pictures, video, audio, or data in locker rooms, restrooms, and any room where testing is conducted on any day and any time. This is not limited to the school day.
What happens if a device is used?
Any cell phones, earbuds, headphones, and other electronic entertainment or recording devices that are visible are considered in use and will be subject to confiscation by school administrators or their designees.
For a first offense, the confiscated device will only be released at the end of the day to the student.
For any succeeding offenses, the device will only be released to the parent or legal guardian.
We encourage parents to review the policy with their children to ensure a smooth, distraction-free learning experience. By doing so, we help foster a positive, safe, and respectful learning environment where every student's voice can be heard.
