Avoid an unpleasant report card surprise
It's bad enough when a student brings home a disappointing report card. It's even worse when poor grades catch parents by surprise. Avoid surprises by keeping up-to-date with your teen's schoolwork. Ask to see your teen’s planner and graded work received back from teachers. Chat with your student daily about school and listen closely; the stories reveal a lot. Contact the teachers if you have any concerns.

Promote responsibility with two simple words
Your teen has responsibilities, but doesn’t always remember them. Instead of scolding, link the responsibility to a positive consequence with "When…then." For example, "When your assignment is finished, then you can relax with a game." You can also send a silent "When…then" message. If your teen is supposed to feed the dog before dinner but forgets, turn your teen’s own plate over to indicate "When you feed Fido, then you can eat."

Use a weather project to build graphing skills
Help your child practice graphing by making a weather chart. On an April calendar, have your child write down (or draw a picture of) each day's weather. At the end of the month, your elementary schooler can count the number of sunny, rainy or cloudy days and make a simple bar graph. Then, help your child use the graph to answer questions, such as, "Were there more sunny or rainy days?" and "Which conditions happened least often?"

Enlarge your child's vocabulary with a few big words
Your elementary schooler’s vocabulary may be filled with short, simple words. But you don't have to speak to your child in small words. Expand vocabulary by using some "big" words occasionally. Children naturally mimic the adults around them, so to teach your child a new word, use it often. Define it. Use it in another sentence. Relate it to words your child already knows ("This book is so interesting; it's captivating!").
