Before your child hands in a writing assignment, go through the COPS checklist for proofreading together. C is for capitalization. Does every sentence start with a capital letter? Are all the proper names capitalized? O is for overall appearance. Is the paper neat and easy to read? P is for punctuation. Are the sentences punctuated correctly? S is for spelling. Has your child checked any word that looks tricky in a dictionary?

Who? What? When? Where? Why? Teach your elementary schooler to keep these questions in mind while reading, and your child will begin to read more carefully and understand the material better. If your student can't answer the questions, suggest reading the passage again.

Before an airplane takes off, the pilot runs through a checklist to be sure everything is ready. Does your student have the backpack, homework, lunch, planner, gym shoes, and signed note that will be needed? Suggest using checklists throughout the day, too. The Nye County Sheriffs Office received information regarding an unsubstantiated threat across multiple Nevada school districts today. Due to this, all schools are implementing "Stay-Put" procedures, limiting movement around and within campus. If students are required to be outside for transitioning between classes, they will be accompanied by an employee.
Sheriff McGill also has deputies driving by, visiting, and monitoring campuses for safety through dismissal time.
Schools will follow normal dismissal times and procedures.
