Five questions improve reading comprehension
Who? What? When? Where? Why? Teach your elementary schooler to keep these questions in mind while reading, and your child will begin to read more carefully and understand the material better. What happened in the story? Where did it happen? Who was involved? When did it happen? Why was it written? Talk with your child about the answers. If your student can't answer the questions, suggest reading the passage again.

A strategy for pilots works for students, too
Before an airplane takes off, the pilot runs through a checklist to be sure everything is ready. Encourage your teen to make a personal checklist and run through it before taking off for school each day. Does your student have the backpack, homework, lunch, planner, gym shoes, and signed note that will be needed? Suggest using checklists throughout the day, too. What does your teen need for each class? To bring home from school?

The Nye County Sheriffs Office received information regarding an unsubstantiated threat across multiple Nevada school districts today. Due to this, all schools are implementing "Stay-Put" procedures, limiting movement around and within campus. If students are required to be outside for transitioning between classes, they will be accompanied by an employee.
Sheriff McGill also has deputies driving by, visiting, and monitoring campuses for safety through dismissal time.
Schools will follow normal dismissal times and procedures.

When your child gets home today, try asking the same question Nobel Prize-winning physicist Isidor Rabi's mother asked him: "Did you ask a good question today?" When you are doing errands or stuck in traffic, keep your child's brain working with thinking activities. At the supermarket, for example, ask your child to point out all the orange items, or everything that costs more than two dollars but less than three. In the car, ask your child to find signs with the letter J or an exclamation point in them. Ask questions that require thought, too: "What do you think might happen if we… ?"

Your teen has great ideas but makes careless errors that bring down grades on school papers. Before turning a paper in, have your teen proofread it slowly. Reading aloud helps because it's often easier to hear a mistake than to catch it by sight. Emphasize that your teen should read what's actually on the page. Our brains often fill in missing letters or words. Suggest proofreading more than once, and double-checking for errors that your teen often makes.

Share an organized approach to essays
Middle and high school students must learn to write answers to essay questions. An organized approach is the key. Suggest beginning with a list of anything your teen thinks should be a part of the answer. Then your student can put the most important ideas in order. The essay's introduction should contain those key concepts and be followed by a paragraph about each. When your teen is finished writing, it's time to proofread to ensure the essay really says what your teen intends.
